When skate companies make runners, it usually ends in tears. When skate companies make lightweight runners, well, who knows what happens? Will anyone run in them? Will skaters wear ‘em on their day off? Does it matter? Why all the questions?
Here’s why. This is Supra’s new lightweight runner, and it’s fair to say we were pleasantly surprised when they gave us the scoop. With the Owen, what you see is what you get. That means a no-nonsense light mesh upper perched on a blown EVA sole – tech-speak for an insanely light foam material that has to be felt to be believed. Nylon webbing straps add a little functional pizazz and a padded elastic tongue provides the comfort factor.
We asked Supra for a press release, expecting the industry-standard ten-page Powerpoint full of overblown hyperbole about pronating gaits and other running jargon. Instead they sent us an email that said : ‘It feels like it’s not even there.’ They’re right! A minimalist shoe deserves a minimalist slogan. At an incredible 200 grams, the Owen really is lighter than air.
