Mark Bodé, Vaughn's son, teamed up with PUMA to design the sneaker/hoodie combo in order to keep the Bodé magic alive. Only 12 pairs of these limited edition shoes will be available exclusively at Hype DC Pitt St in Sydney beginning March 31.
PUMA introduces the Vaughn Bodé Clyde, created to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the creation of Cheech Wizard, an iconic cartoon character created by New Yorker Vaughn Bodé. This limited edition run of shoes is complimented by a hoodie that is uniquely PUMA and in Bodé-style.
An icon to graffiti writers and influencer of street culture from the mid-70's to the present, Vaughn Bodé was known as the cartoon messiah. In September 1957, Vaughn Bodé designed a unique little wizard who wore a huge yellow hat covered with red and black stars. Bodé aptly named the infamous creation as Cheech Wizard - inspired by a can of Cheechy Nuts!
"I created you, and all this, this subjective reality as a vehicle to teach us our way on the high journey to the laughing light," Bodé once told his colorful character in his own cartoon. Cheech then proceeded to throw up on Bodé, as Cheech Wizard, the character, had become bigger than the creator himself. "I don't hide, losers hide. I is a hero. Heros observe from da interior of their hats," the Cheech Wizard said about his oversized hat.
On the 50th birthday of his Cheech Wizard character, PUMA pays homage to Vaughn Bodé with the limited edition Vaughn Bodé Clyde and hoodie to match - forever immortalizing Bodé's influence by using the bold colorways and prominent star patterns made famous by Cheech Wizard himself.
Using the equally iconic PUMA Clyde silhouette, the Vaughn Bodé Clyde features the yellow-black-red Cheech Wizard star pattern and a bold PUMA formstripe. The shoe features three sets of laces for color customization and a Cheech Wizard key chain, explaining the history of Cheech.
The insert inside the shoes recognizes da Big Hat himself, Da Cheech. The sneakers are made of nubuck leather with high gloss printed stars and branding throughout. For comfort and breathability, the interior lining is made of soft, full grain pigskin while the quarter linings are compiled of brushed synthetic suede. The hoodie has a stitched star motif and Cheech Wizard zipper. Small Cheech Wizard silhouettes line the interior of the jacket.
