Factory Records was a manchester based, independent record label formed in 1978. The seminal label’s most prominent acts were Joy Division, New Order and the Happy Mondays, whose music was powerful enough to define an entire English generation. In 1982, Factory Records created a project called FAC51, codename for a Manchester club called the Hacienda. The club became legendary within the Manc scene, drawing huge crowds every week as the summers of love blossomed in the north.
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Hacienda, Peter Saville and Ben Kelly (the club’s interior designer) have created a shoe known as FAC51-Y3, with the assistance of Peter Hook (the bass player from Joy Division/New Order). Based on a Y-3 shoe known as ‘The Sprint’, it comes enclosed in a custom box inspired by the shape of the Hacienda dancefloor and wrapped in tissue paper that features Kevin Cummins’ photography from the club in its late ‘80s heyday. Also included is a DVD featuring original footage from the Hacienda. Peter Saville produced the iconic artwork for the Factory record sleeves and in a nice twist, he was also responsible for Yohji Yamamoto’s iconic advertising from 1986 to 1992. Last year he also created one of the nicer pieces in the adicolor series.
How do you get your hands on one of only 250 pairs being made? Your first chance is in August as they exclusively retail out of the new Y-3 Manchester store for two weeks. They will then be available in Y-3 London, Tokyo and other select retailers around the world. Priced at £345, 81,000¥ and $680 US, you also get the chance to check them out at the 25th Anniversary exhibition at the Urbis gallery in Manchester.
