For over 20 years Nike ACG – All Conditions Gear – has blazed the trail, delivering the highest level of performance product built for the wears of the world’s most extreme environments from sub-zero to sub-tropic. Taking inspiration from its rich 20-year history, Nike Sportswear celebrates the 20th Anniversary of ACG with the Air Magma Ripstop. Utilizing the same construction of the original Magma, which actually predates ACG as one of the categories inspirations, the Air Magma Ripstop is remixed in five bright colors and is clothed in a waterproof membrane. The Magma was originally inspired by a 1978 expedition by two men who set out to climb K-2, the second highest mountain in the world after Mount Everest. They say every pound you put on your feet is like putting six pounds on your back. So, wanting something lightweight that would make them go faster, the climbers made it to base camp wearing only the Nike LDV shoes on their feet. Before this, Nike had no intention of making hiking boots, but they got to thinking that if they had the technology to help world-class athletes run faster and farther, why couldn’t they do the same for those who trek the deserts, river valleys and glacial moraines? Three years later, the Magma was born as a part of the original outdoor boot pack. And now, a little over twenty years later, the Magma is remixed for today’s sportsman. The original Magma was made from full-grain, roughcut leather that had been oiled and waxed, in a Desert Brown colorway with red laces to symbolize the magma that flows from the mouth of a volcano after erupting. The Air Magma Ripstop is constructed exactly as the original, however is remixed for today, representing the highest level of the Nike Sportswear philosophy. Nike switched out the leather for a waterproof technical rip-stop in five of the original ACG colorways. In a mid-cut boot construction, it protects the foot from abrasion and moisture penetration. The solid rubber toe-guard of the outsole provides added wear and protection, and creates a strong bond between the sole and the upper. Other features of the shoe – such as the hinged eyestays, bellows tongue and notched counter and collar – provide secure fit, prevent debris from entering the shoe and minimizes pressure on the achilles.
