Since we are on the topic of hip hop I have just finished reading a book called "Where You're at: Notes from the Frontline of a Hip Hop Planet" (the cover has a pair of silver vandals on the front but that is irrelevant). Basically the book is about an English hip hop lover who goes to 5 different places (New York, Japan, Cape Town, Johannesburg and Rio) on the search for hip hop. When he was in the states he is saying that hip hop is dead and is controlled by rich white men and that the local independent labels who still make 'real' hip hop get little respect in the U.S and most there markets are in Europe and Japan. In the other four places he talks about how people are still using hip hop as a form of expression. It really is a dam good read, I recommend going to the Library (that is where I got it from) or going to amazon.com to buy a copy. You will not be disappointed, if you have read it please let me know because it is very insightful.

I never said that hip hop is dead, sorry to ruin the ending but the author says hip hop is alive and well, it is the 'old school' producers he talks to in the book who said hip hop is dead. To an extent they are right, they say that they cant compete against the marketing machines off Sony, BMG etc and that these labels are making records purely for financial benefit and they are creating one hit wonders which are targeted towards white middle income kids who have little idea about the roots of hip hop but they have pocket money to buy the latest cd's.

the underground scene is alive and well, and killing it... indie labels such as babygrande, rhymesayers, psycho-logical records are seriously killing it...
the underground will live forever

Big ups to the new Quasimoto album at the end of the year.
