Project Help

I am currently a Junior at TCU and for my Consumer Insights class I have to make an 8-10 documentary on a consumer subgroup. And what better way to research about my passion of Sneakers than doing a project on sneaker heads. I was wondering what local boutiques shops there are now that are popular in the area. If anyone that has a great collection would be interested in doing an interview for the documentary. The questions will not be personal about your life just on how you got into collecting sneakers, most expensive shoe, most prized shoe, and how much you spend annually on shoes, etc. We would also want to film your sneakers. If you are interested best form of contacting me would be on my email at steven.stults@tcu.edu. Any help you may give will be great.

Re: Project Help

this kind of thing gets asked for quite regularly on SF. i'm sure we can find people to help, however...

whats TCU? where is it? i'm guessing america? what are the local boutiques? most of the guys here are in australia. it'll be hard for you to film us, and our collections.

more details required basically.

Re: Project Help

Also, just a tip to the OP, when doing assignments and stuff that you have to pick what you do... doing something you have an interest in and some idea about is good, doing it on something you are totally into, usual doesn't turn out to well

Re: Project Help

mik - post a redirection to here and close the others?

curious - why is it worse to pick something you're totally into? over familiarity with the topic? i haven't handed up an assignment in 20 years or so. that last girl from the uk asking questions like this didnt really seem to know (in great detail) about sneakers so she's kinda proved your point. just curious why its true?

Re: Project Help

Sorry TCU stands for Texas Christian University which is in Fort Worth,Texas about 45 west of Dallas. I apologize for posting in multiple sections of the forum. I was not sure which area would produce the best results in terms of replies.

Re: Project Help

meh dont worry steven. mik and i just like to complain because it's us that have to tidy stuff up.

looks like mik was right about Texas. unless you're planning an .au holiday soon, you're gonna have difficulty filming any of us. there's a few americans on SF but not that many. you'll probably have better luck on niketalk or solecollector?

if its just questions, then list them here and i'm sure you'll get some emailed replies.

Re: Project Help

yeah, its all cool, jsut that extra 10 sec of work to clsoe stuff...

oh and I must admit, I am a grumpy git, and getting worse!

since we are derailing the topic smile  I think (therefore i'm right...no not grumpy at all), that when you pick a topic you are really into, you want it to be great, but you already have a preconceived opinion of whatever you are taling about, so whatever you are doing it always has a slant on it that you think its the coolest thing and that comes through in your report, which doesn't necessarily get you good marks...

my biased opinion

and i'm always right about texas...

Re: Project Help

mik_grumpy_git - that makes some sense. you already have a biased view, so the report you write comes out suiting that viewpoint?

Steven - its probable your questions might be similar to the other people who asked this kind of thing, so probably i can reuse the same answers i had typed up then. give us a list of questions and we'll try and help.

if you wanna chip in for airfares, i think Modzilla said last time he'd fly if people paid him to fly. there's probably others who'd be happy to get a free trip to america if that meant appearing in some film. probably cheaper and easier to ask on the american forums though.

whats the angle of your doco? why are people getting killed for jordans again? why are people spending food and rent money on sneakers? why are people gathering 200+ colourways of the same shoe? why are people queuing up? why are people buying sneakers? why are people wearing skinny leg jeans and pinrolling? why are people not correcting the horrible lacejobs that come with the sneakers by default? why are people bothering to wear jordans in non OG colourways? why do people bother to wear non air cushioned shoes? why do people buy customs? why do people wear fakes?   give us some clues smile

Re: Project Help

theres also the fact that just bercause you're really into something, doesn't make it any good for a/the report...or that you actualy have a clue about what you're talking about...

and brendan, they are all good questions...all which point to how crap the whole sneaker thing seems to be atm

Re: Project Help

kinda related to some of the questions i asked....

Top 10 things sneakerheads should be doing (from complex magazine).

i found this an interesting read/view. some of the points i totally agree with, other points make me wonder a bit.

in summary

wear your sneakers (agree)
dont instagram every single sneaker you wear (dont care)
throw out your boxes (disagree but not keeping boxes for resale)
make your grails your beaters (mostly agree)
step outside your comfort zone (bah, no air no wear)
give back (agree)
wear your sneakers for their intended purpose (mostly agree)
shop clearance racks (agree)
tell someone else you like their sneakers (agree)
skip a major release (agree)

wear your sneakers (agree)
dont instagram every single sneaker you wear (dont care)
throw out your boxes (i find them a good way to store them)
make your grails your beaters (agree if they are wearable...)
step outside your comfort zone (well i just buy what i like, not going to buy something just have wear something different)
give back (agree)
wear your sneakers for their intended purpose (well running in retros is daft, otherwise yeah)
shop clearance racks (don't care, i buy stuff whenever i want to, clearance or not, but i don't buy as much as others)
tell someone else you like their sneakers (not about to do that)
skip a major release (always)

Re: Project Help

after moving heaps of sneakers from perth to melbourne, i find keeping the boxes the best way to store them too.

i wear grails if i have them. why wouldnt i wear them?

if i spot sneakers and i wanna know what they are, i ask. generally the person wearing the sneakers is happy to talk about them. i've got some good friends currently where the friendship started with "hey mate, what nikes are they you're wearing?" (either they asked me, or i asked them).

stepping outside my comfort zone - well i wear nikes and everybody knows it. for me to step outside my comfort zone is choosing a pair of lunar based runners, or getting a non retro jordan shoe (the superfly lows i've been loving recently as a good example).

i often check the clearance racks because if there's something i'm after on the racks, it means it will be cheap smile the best sneakers are cheap sneakers.

i've tried to give back by occasionally giving shoes away. sometimes its because someone i know has told me an interesting story about why they love some shoe i have. sometimes i've worked out that the beggers on smith street are my shoe size and so i give them shoes from the swapmeet stock. recently a friend of a friend tweeted that he'd stepped knee deep in mud in the only pair of sneakers he had brought with him from perth. luckily for him, he was the same size as a pair of those asics that came with the SF issues a couple of swapmeets ago. i gave them to him for nothing. i've gotten other friends sneakers here and there too. because i often get access to cheap sneakers, and i know that the friends need sneakers, i can often get the friends cheap sneakers that are 'good enough' for their purposes. i figure its me helping the karma move around. if i get cheap/free sneakers and cant use/wear them, why wouldn't i help others out by passing them along?

skipping major releases - depends entirely on what shoe it actually is.

all in all, i thought the complex suggestions in the article are pretty good. i'm sure we could come up with some more suggestions to add, but if a lot more people started agreeing with, and acting on the suggestions Complex made, i think the sneaker scene would be a bit better off.
