PURPOSE OF HIGH-TOP SHOES ?

Purpose of High-Top shoes ?

I was discussing something about what shoes to buy in another thread where I was struck with reality that high-top shoes are no good for running. High-Top shoes are my favorite ones, I love them a lot, they are very comfortable and even protect the feet to the ankle level but my love was shattered when I came across that reply.

So I wanna ask, running shoes are for running, they even fine for walking. Nike, Adidas and other companies manufacture very stylish high-top shoes. For what purpose High-Top shoes are designed for, strictly and only for Basketball  playing ?

Re: Purpose of High-Top shoes ?

well retro shoes are really just for looks, they don't really make them like they used to, so to even say they were good for X or Y sport 20 years ago doesn't mean there any good for sport nowdays.

high tops are for ankle support, but they can come in many forms, basketball, volleyball, areobics, hiking and many other sports, and each one has its own specific design features for each application...

look, its not like you can't do things in shoes that arent design for that sort of stuff (my old flatmate used to run in old adidas tennis shoes with his toes hanging out the end... he had no problems, and could kick my but every time) but they are designed for 1 thing, and to do something else will work, but there are shoes designed to do that thing better.

Hey Mik.. thanks for the great info. So can you advise on if I want to buy shoes which:

1) support ankles
2) long range walking (like 5 KMs)
3) Zero leather.
4) running (for some very rare and unfortunate time like 10 guys bent on beating the hell out of me).

Thats all I am looking for.

hahahah

what kind of ankle support do you need?

what is wrong with your ankles?

A lot of the time you could get some sort of sports orthotic which would help much better for your ankles knees and back. I would say go for a tennis shoe or a cross trainer. they will of lateral support which is good for the ankles but also help stabilizer  the feet and allow you to do what you need.
And you will be more comfortable than wearing a high top just because they look good, get them for casual, and the others for day to day use.

cross trainers if you need more ankle support.  or just wear additional ankle supports.

high tops are mostly for basketball except for the other designer shoes.

I started wearing high tops after my first ankle sprain/injury in high school.  before then, i would wear anything to play.

After further injuries, i decided to add ankle supports especially when I play with Kobe IVs. smile

^ agree.  i recommend these two.  mowabb - mid cut  or carnivore - high cut. both have ankle support and good cushioning plus light on the feet.

^^ er... mowabbs don't actally have any ankle support, the bootie is designed to keep crap out... its about the only thing they did well, shit to run in, shit to bike in... too hot to wear for actual sport, but you couldn't wear them in the wet (try it... ruins them in 12 sec flat)...

but they sure looked cool and broke neks... (well they did 17 years ago)...

i'd say something more along the lines from merrell or salomon... considering the rogue ground...

Re: Purpose of High-Top shoes ?

opps what happened there. sorry about the double posts. sad

@ three stripes

im kinda sneaker-in-hiatus since I got myself a mortgage in 2004 lol change of priorities I guess. I thought the sneaker scene has changed like im too old for this shit. case in point, i was the oldest dude in the line for Dunkles. But I still occasionally buy/sell shoes and check the usual shops around the city. smile

@ brendan

some dude at Hype told me the carnivore retro is next year when he saw me wearing my Unlimiteds smile

@ mik_git

I thought the mowabb has good support at the ankles cuz they're hella tight around the ankles and hard to get my feet into especially with socks on. Or maybe I have fat feet and ankles smile

=K=

PS. been checking SF lately largely due to seeing the Yeezy on Robbin's feet (robbin of espionage) and angelfunk's awesome funny posts.

There is nothing wrong with my ankles. Its just that when I wore Converse High-Top Chuck Taylor All-Stars I felt extremely comfortable. Seemed like as if the shoe is part of my leg, its was very lightweight and I did not have to use strength when I picked my feet up, it gave my feet heck lot of mobility. I stopped wearing it only because it hurts the smallest toe of my left foot and it hurts very bad there, the shoe somehow continuously keep on rubbing that toe and I feel pain with that. Right side shoe is fine. Hence I was looking for some advice before I buy new ones.

But may be I lack experience as I never bought Adidas, NIKE, Reebok or NB or any other brand, they are too expansive to be bought. I have worn only action or Lakhani shoes all of my life. Converse are the first really branded ones I bought and they are way batter than those 2 brands I mentioned.

in all honesty, if they were working for you, in what your doing, i'd say keep going with them, chucks generally wear like nails, so anything else will wear out MUCH faster, maybe just try 1/2 size bigger...

@kuyakoy

the og mowabbs were hell tight to get on, but the retro's are loose and sloppy in comparison. i've had 4 pair of the retro's and they've all been the same. i thought they must have changed it deliberately.

@ mik

that's a harsh review lol i never did any proper running in the OGs but i wore them in the rain happily without a drama. definitely they broke necks though thumbsup

@ arnuld

i'd go with what mik suggested - 1/2 size up, and then wear a thick sock on the smaller foot if needed. as a bonus, you can fix chucks up easily too with gaffa and goo if they wear out.

Well, where I live (Hyderabad, INDIA), which quite of a good known city, I don't see any half-size shoes. I laughed a lot when I was creating a forum account at SF, it asked my size in 8, 8.5, 9 and 9.5 ranges. You don't get such kind of numbers here, it is either 8, 9 or 10 or 11. no half numbers available.

ummm... go for canvas nike blazer, go 1 size up... (well for me converse run 1/2 size bigger, but i don't have any chucks so could be wrong)....

also, just a query, we're recommending all sorts of stuff of varying levels, if actual availablitlity is a problem, where are you going to get stuff from. cause i'd say if you can't get a 1/2 size chuck, you won't be able to get any of this stuff...

just a thought, how about a non-spiked cricket shoe? or hockey synthetic turf shoes?...

There are exclusive showrooms of all major brands like Adidas, NIKE, Reebok, Woodland and PUMA. Brands like NB, Merrell, Salomon are not available at all, none. You can see hardly 1 or 2 models of Lotto though.

The problem is the models you have suggested here are not even available in those exclusive showrooms and trust me these showrooms are quite big and very large in numbers, may be 10-15 of woodland, 8-10  of Adidas, NIKE and PUMA (each) across the city, but all have 97% of the same stuff. Then there is a very popular sports showroom named Planet Sports which keeps some sports shoes too and this is where I got Chucks. 3rd, there are big shopping malls which again have showroom of different brands. Thats all you can find about shoes here in India.

Now it may look strange but we in India wear one  shoe for everything: Jeans, Cricket, Football, Hockey, Jogging, Walking and that is a general sports shoe. Even if someone goes to NIKE or Adidas showroom he won't check the running or high-top or trainers, he will just go ahead and buy one he liked and will use it for everything.  Either the shoe is formal, casual or sports, there are no further categories that one knows. This is the first time in my life I heard the words like Sneakers, High-Tops, Dunks, Cross-Trainers etc. and yes I am 29.

Don't know about the Hockey but those cricket ones you mentioned can't be found. I forgot to tell you that I bought PUMA shoes (in some sale at 40% off), they are 2-in-1 shoes, you can remove the steel spikes with a tool available and make them a running shoe, very fine quality cushions and very comfortable. After Chucks hurt my toe badly, I bought them (with a heavy hit on my pocket but they are great)

My heart was locked onto Chucks (and High-Tops) though, they were the first shoes that made into my heart smile

I have gotten your point though. For the kind of things I am in, only Running or Cross-Trainers will fit, not the High-Tops. No matter how beautiful a girl is and how much good and happy you feel as her lover but if she does not respect you much and is bad for you  then she has to go out of your life. Too bad, I have to do the same to High-Tops sad

Re: Purpose of High-Top shoes ?

Ha, maybe thats because your i India, and haven't been exposed to the 10 million tonnes of rubbish lifestyle andvertising... you may not have noticed, but on here, i'd say 95% (maybe 90%) of people, don't actually use the shoes they have for there intended purpose, they just buy them because they look good...

I'd say that if you were actually buying these shoe for a purpose, then get the specific shoe (eg for running a running shoe), but is you seem to be looking for an all day every day shoe, that will still enable you to move quickly when you need to, I wouldn't count out a high top, i've run in them (haven't gone for a run in them, but been wearing then and need to run).

I'd say, pick your pricepoint, go to the stores, try on every shoe in the price range you can afford, see which is the most comfortable, because if your going to wear this shoe all day every day, then this is the most important.
