Naturally, our mind wanders straight to the nitty gritty of collecting Prestos. How many other weirdos, we wonder, are out there bidding against Leon for Prestos on the Bay? Is there a secret society who only like to order their shoes in small, medium and large?
‘It is a very small market. A lot of the guys collect Prestos just because it’s vintage Nike or they’re interested in the whole Alpha Project phase, but there are guys like me who are willing to pay big bucks for them, so they do sell for quite a bit. There’s a lot of competition and it’s growing because people are turning back to these old school shoes when they realise how good they are.’
True. But Leon is a guy who likes to keep it on the downlow. Having vaguely known him for years, never once did he hint at the extent of his collection. ‘There’s a very big gap between the people who appreciate them and the people who give them a weird look. The older guys dig it, because they were around when these were coming out. My workmates who are younger, they kind of look at them and say, ‘What’s this?’ But I just take it in my stride. I just think it’s a piece of history that deserves to be worn and deserves to be seen in public.’
