“No disrespect to Clyde because he’s the man, but I was never into basketball. I started rocking PUMAs because they had that look, and also I wore no laces at that time, and they stayed on your foot like, bow! One time I busted my ankle, so I needed one shoe laced up. I ended up putting a shoe from another pair on the busted foot. When my manager saw it, he was like, “Y’all that looks cool.” And that became my thing. If you look at my old album covers, you can see the PUMA suits. And then the mix-match working on the Clydes - I would go blue and white on one foot and maybe red and white on the other. Or black and gray and then black and gold. Everyone knew Shan wore two different PUMAs. It became like my get out of jail free card. To have two fresh pairs on all the time, I had to be on the hunt though because at some points over the years you could not find them. I remember coming to London and I saw a tan and black pair. I fell in love and had to have them off the rack, paid my pounds and brought them back to Queens. A little import export, you know.”
