WACKY LACES - WORLD'S CRAZIEST SNEAKERS!

NIKE AIR MOC
1990s

The Air Moc was a product of the maddest minds at
Nike’s ACG division. Released in the early 90s to
nonplussed fans of the outdoors, it was originally
designed to look like a fat potato, complete with
steaming forkholes! A modern, tongue-in-cheek
interpretation of an Eskimo mukluk, the Moc could
be slipped on at short notice and was designed to
be worn with no particular purpose in mind. Comfort
was key. As designer Steve McDonald said
“Performance is a relative term. These perform nicely
for their intended purpose... slacking! Others have
tried to mimic them but they always end up looking
like foot turds or elf shoes.”

Over the years, dozens of Air Moc versions have been
released. Some look like mid-cut Ugg boots complete
with lunatic fringes, others have quilted leather uppers
and enhanced ACG features. Colabs have included
Maharam, Atmos and somewhat surprisingly, a Liberty
of London edition complete with flowery patterns was
also released. These days the Moc is still in production
and still snapping necks with its dumpy, plump looks
and it’s the kind of thing that is often suffixed with the
‘big in Japan’ label. Which it is. Indeed, the lack of laces
on the Moc is just one aspect of its overall weirdness.
