THE SLIP ON
1973
Sean Penn’s portrayal of the wastoid Jeff Spicoli
in Fast Times at Ridgemont High gave the Vans
Slip-On its mainstream push, but Hollywood can
only claim a small amount of credit for this shoe’s
enduring survival. Worn by skaters and surfers for
many years, the Slip-On made a seamless transition
into the world of BMX. The lack of laces meant no
chainwheel disasters and the waffle grip was perfect
for almost any pedal.
Not many shoes manage to hold it together across
so many opposing cultures, but you can go almost
anywhere wearing a Slip-On and be accepted. The
unobstructed upper was the perfect canvas for the
multitude of collaborative and custom designs that
have spanned the shoe’s legacy since it first came
out in 1973. Almost 40 years old and still looking
good today – just one of the reasons the Slip-On
design by Vans has been imitated by every brand
on the planet.
