On being given your weapon of choice and time limit, you could crumble under the pressure to design something that hasn’t been done beforehand.
This mindstate often results in unpleasant results. Of course we’re not condoning sneaker conservatism by any means, but often there might be a reason why your winning idea hasn’t already gone into production. The ‘damn, why didn’t I think of that?’ factor will always outweigh the ‘what the fuck is that?’ factor. Why not make something simple but effective, making your mark with an element of stealth rather than enforcing it with sledgehammer subtlety? Anyone can apply all the colours of the rainbow to a kick, but that shit’s gonna gather dust in the long term, and be jettisoned with the quickness for quick cash. Don’t ruin the symmetry of a clean and simple creation with a mismatching neon trim for the sake of being esoteric.
