In 2001, Nike introduced the Women’s Air Force-1 Low in white with pink snakeskin accents. Other styles that followed included red satin AF-1s with ribbon laces and white with pink trim, a gray swoosh and diamond accent. These releases may seem like grand marks for us ladies but for true sneaker heads, it’s a cop-out. Give us what you give the men!
Nonetheless, we can’t knock Nike, as they’ve been one of the first footwear companies to at least attempt to reach the new breed of female sneaker consumer. Perhaps it’s because Nike has actually hired women designers and product line managers that are sneaker heads?
an example of nike’s commitment to the category is the creation of the women’s brand jordan group which has been around for about two years. It’s led by a female creative director, Fran Boller, and a female product manager, Brandeis Russell. Finally footwear created for us, by women who can give us what we’ve been asking for.
As Arsen, the owner of Kendo, the first all-female sneaker boutique in Los Angeles tells it, “The brand that does the best job is Nike. Girls are always looking for the new Nikes, but are often disappointed that the women’s versions are much less thought out and creative than their male counterpart releases.”
