The womens’ footwear industry has been around since the days of female athletes. And while we’ve never had any major problems finding athletic performance shoes or casual styles, when it comes to a lifestyle or culture influenced shoe, now that’s been an entirely different story. With the explosion of streetwear, it’s opened the door for an emerging breed of female sneaker heads. Back in my days, there weren’t many liked-minded girls who shared the same convictions. The emergence of highly popular female streetwear brands like Married to the MOB, Hellz Bellz and Mama clothing, who have all created apparel designed specifically to hook-up to the colorways of your kicks, means that today I’m no longer a lonely sneakerhead. Female sneaker culture is alive and kicking.
So to all the sneaker companies out there, we are female sneaker heads! We are different to the men – a wash of white, pink and turquoise colors and bows and ribbons just won’t cut it for us. Don’t just assume that because you throw pink on a shoe, we’ll immediately cop it. The last time I wore pink was in the second grade.
DON'T SLEEP ON US!
The first step for companies is to recognize that female sneaker heads exist. We want them to invest the same amount of time and energy they place into men’s kicks as they do into the ladies. Remember, we want the latest Nike SBs or Jordans too!
According to Lori Lobenstine from FemaleSneakerFiend.com, the first site devoted to the female connoisseur, “the women’s sneaker industry is in transition right now. Sneaker companies will continue to focus on the things that they know, keeping an eye on fitness crazes and an ever-growing range of pink in Lady Footlocker etc. But the transition is coming. They have just begun to notice the serious female sneaker fiend.”
