VINTAGE HYBRIDS
Anyway, what really got me started on this piece was sight of some vintage pieces that really put the current mash-up hysteria into historical perspective. How does a 180 sole unit with a BW upper sound? Or an Air Max 90 upper with a BW sole? Or what may be the piece de resistance - an Air Pegasus with a gnarly BW sole? These shoes are real! If you think I’m making this up or these are photoshop inventions, prepare to be wrongified. If you’re schooled in Japanese mags like Boon and Streetjack then you have probably seen something similar over the years, but for many, this is definitely a new blip on the radar.
Proof of these shoe’s existence throws a new light on the current crop of half-castes. It proves that the inter-model tinkering has been going on for years, certainly at least as long as these shoes have been around. Thus, one would assume, they were created under the jurisdiction of the original designers. If they are open to it, why shouldn’t we be as well? It would have been really something to have asked those guys what they thought of these vintage relics. Whilst our request for more information on these ‘frankensteins’ was not met with an affirmative, we can only make some assumptions. It would seem they were more prototypes than sales samples – I certainly can’t find any in our extensive collection of Nike catalogues.
