DAMON WAY - DC SHOES

Was that first shoe for Danny or Colin?
They launched together…
Besides the lace loops, what other features did the shoes have that made people go nuts for them?
I do not think it was so much about smaller details such as lace loops as it was about a completely new approach to skate shoe design and marketing within the industry. Skateboarders were hungry for something new at the time and we fulfilled it.
Were you super-confident you’d become filthy rich overnight?
Monetary success was never a driving force for us… We were really focused on doing something new and compelling within the industry and let our passion drive us. The monetary end of this has all been a by-product of that passion. On a side note the term ‘filthy rich" and the definition of it is highly subjective and tends to lean more on the ‘absurdly wealthy’ side than the ‘doing pretty well’ side… I think we fall on the latter side of the two, and in the most humble sense of the phrase.
Nothing is ever that easy is it??
That is an understatement. Most people have no idea how difficult it is to build a business and a brand. There are so many variables that extend far beyond a good concept and idea.
You then branched out into snowboarding, BMX and motocross just as they all took off. Do you guys have crystal balls?
It all seemed very natural and intuitive for us at the time… I think because they were sports that we participated in, or were close to, at one point or another in our lives. The common thread that seemed to pull them together then was that same non-conformist spirit that drove skateboarding and it’s culture.
