Do you feel it was about time for the ladies to be inducted into the sneaker game? it’s pretty macho in a way, with only a sprinkling of women involved in stores and design. What’s your take on all that side of things?
Being a sneaker collector for the last 15 plus years, I was shocked to find ladies with similar interests. But it seems very competitive within the women’s collecting circles. When the product is limited, I guess the Claws come out! I am so excited that this is a shoe for women by women, finally! I do think the industry has been ignoring the ladies and not making the product that they want and need. But this will all change as our voice is being heard and companies are responding. This sneaker is a real feather in my cap on so many levels, and I am honored to be the first.
Do you see any parallels with the graff scene?
When you command respect in any field it is noteworthy, but when you are one of a handful of females doing it DOWN and DIRTY, you either get love for it or major hate! Thank goodness I have been enveloped in LOVE, for my whole career. I think that has made the difference, that I was never treated special because I was a girl, but I received support and friendship, in which I was able to grow and prosper.
What drew you to the Nike Blazer?
Well, it’s the first basketball shoe from Nike. So it seemed to be a no brainer. The Blazer also allowed me to go crazy with my textile as it has actually a lot of fabric on the body of the shoe.
