2008 - BEST OF THE BEST SNEAKERS

As I get older I find myself adding kicks to my collection that cater to a more mature look, but it somehow remains that my favourite thing is getting that pair that I wish I never grew out of, or beat up as a child. While the Air Jordan 1 Low Velcros did not exist when I was younger, it still evokes that unparalleled childlike excitement when I broke them out the box and strapped them on my feet. Of course the fun is furthered by criss-crossing the straps, leaving the straps loose, and just listening to that vicious rip of Velcro over and over and over.

Non-true Jordan retros aren’t everyone’s taste, let alone the use of Velcro, but my immediate reaction was similar to getting a new toy. Break ‘em out of the box and go! They’re daring and different, and I find myself hard pressed to even think of any sneaker in the Jordan catalogue that isn’t pure success in the classic white/red/black colourway. The Jordan 1 Highs were always restrictive to get down in, making these lows even more conducive for breakdancing, with the Velcro adding that old school b-boy flare.

There’s nothing too extravagant as far as materials, but the butter here is the endless ways to mess with the straps, dress the look up, and dress the look down. I also have to admit enjoying and finding humour in the sour reaction people have towards my choice to go pro-Velcro...  but that’s fine, more pairs for me!
