Was this even a debate? Ok, there were loads of great shoes from 2008, but seriously, anything as great as the Hyperdunk?
Personal preference aside, let’s look at the facts. From debut to today, the Hyperdunk has received the ultimate red carpet treatment. Nike flew in hundreds of press from around the globe to Beav-town to unveil the creation in a press event with guest speakers including CEO Mark Parker, Kobe Bryant and mastermind Eric Avar. The shoes make the most of Nike tech with Zoom Air cushioning, Lunarfoam midsole and Flywire technology. The shoes got some good air-time over the summer hopping over exotic sports cars, were seen on the feet of more Olympians than any other basketball shoe and appeared in an ad campaign called ‘That ain’t right.’
Like the Dunks, it is hard to keep count of how many colourways, combinations and special make-ups there have been of the Hyperdunk, but none are as memorable as the ‘Marty McFly’ edition. Eric Avar took inspiration from Michael J Fox’s kicks for the Hyperdunk and brought things full circle with this color up.
Unlike many ‘inspired by’ or nickname sneakers, Nike made things official with an exclusive licensing agreement with Universal Studios. Hoverboard insole, glow-in-the-dark sole, special box and tissue, and Kobe showing up to the release in a DeLorean. The only thing missing are the power laces!
