I’m not saying these are the best kicks of 2008. There are others which are more creative, more exclusive and probably even more comfortable. But these PF Flyer Bob Cousys are my flat-out favourites.
First of all, they’re so damn green! I’m still a fan of white-on-whites, but green-on-green-on-green? Love ‘em. Second, check out the ‘gull wing closure’, which is both comfortable and intriguing. What starts out as a real simple shoe ends up being classy, fun and way more comfortable than most. (PF Flyer doesn’t disappoint with their ‘soft cushion, rigid support’ Posture Foundation.)For those of you not big on basketball, Bob Cousy became famous while leading the Boston Celtics to six championships in the ‘50s and ‘60s. (This signature model came from 1956.) He was way ahead of his time, throwing some of the nastiest passes the NBA had ever seen while leading the league in assists eight seasons in a row.
I started loving the Celtics as a teenager watching the championship teams of the ‘80s, but recently I’d given up hope. This year I got my Cousys and the Celtics won the NBA Championship once again. Call it a coincidence, but I’m doing my part and repping Beantown with these green beans whenever I can.
Another thing I love about these sneakers is somehow they just didn’t want to stay in the box. Whereas I usually keep my favourite sneakers locked away for the right occasion, the casualness of the rubber and the cheerfulness of the canvas on these just switched it up for me. These guys didn’t want to sit around waiting for a sneaker party; they wanted to be out on the subway, walking the dog, even balling in the park. They wanted scuffmarks, action and stories to tell. And so did I. While the rest of my kicks are home feeling important, my Cousys and I are out making things happen. I love ‘em!
