Wandering into an explanation...

blog by benny basics 27th Sep 2006

“Roast Beef, Medium, is not only a food. It is a philosophy. Seated at Life's Dining Table, with the menu of Morals before you, your eye wanders a bit over the entrées, the hors d'oeuvres, and the things although you know that Roast Beef, Medium, is safe and sane, and sure.”

Some of you know me while to others; I'm just some interweb persona talking shit about shoes and apparel. I figure I'll set the record straight with some real talk. In honor of Elayenwai, I'll make this as lacoste as possible, lets get gully...

I make stuff. It's fun, and also one of those general and widespread careers that I am so happy to call mine. I started working in the avenues of print design when I was young, went to college in a small town in northern California, working my ass off and writing graffiti to fill the compulsion that something was missing. In Chico (that small town in northern California) I decided to open up a Screen Printing shop and do that and design work full time while finishing up school. So I did.

Basic Environment was born. Originally as a response to needing an easy way to document current work and spawn new jobs, this firm sprouted from my need to really do something. From there I opened the arm of screen-printing into the mix. After doing that for a while, boosting my quality and craft levels, understanding apparel design and construction by dismantling garments and reapplying texture, print, and more recently embroidery, I decided to try to step it up a bit.

Insert graduation from Uni and a trip to Switzerland for in depth typographic, color, 3 dimensional forms and illustration training. The program was one of those amazing opportunities. 17 people from around the world applied and were accepted from a pool of hundreds of applicants. The journey, a behemoth of design and tradition process form the Swiss Masters. I had just finished up college and was, for want of a better word, about to experience my design life for the first time. Really. 7-hour days, and only Sundays off, inserted amidst the chaos were realism, understanding, depravity and clarity. From that point it all truly began.

Traveled around the European entity for the remainder of my time away from home, toured the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Prague, and finally fell in love with the mysteries of Spain. All of these places threw me into a new sensibility and understanding of culture as well as the unique design strategies that the artists manifested into cultural stability as well as the pride of their soil. Boom, explosions in LDN rock the flights stability, as I try to salvage my own stability via a journey to my own soil. Waiting in London for the Chaos of terrorism to die down was as educational as every new city I spent time in. Urban Chaos was the same teacher for a different lesson as Cadaques; Spain was for my itinerant recess.

Finally home to the US from my home in EU, and made the trek from Chico to my new home in Los Angeles. Enter design job, desk, check in check out, blah blah, Elayenwai knows the pains of designing for plumbers and Airline Car services...Not for me either. Working on crazy projects but never really getting much out of it as far as emotion. Time for life to spin things out and bring us up to speed with me now.

We Are Supervision, Inc. A design venture in its most general form. First a phone call, waking me up from sleep about to go to desk job number one. Want to work with us? Two friends, short time knowing, long time trusting, next thing you know I'm not working a desk job.

Flights out to Chicago, Philly, Kansas City, New York, Midwest, East, West, North, South, near, far, work with VW, Chevy, Ford, Jeep, Mountain Dew, US Cellular, CSU Colleges (California State Universities,) Rogue Status, Brothers Arms, and a plethora of other companies. Focus, Urban markets and urban aesthetics with clean anti traditional specs. Basic Environment fades out of existence and we pull into the lead, reigns in hand.

So yeah, this is me, just some tattooed kid who likes making print, cotton, and paper products. Care to kick it, I'll show you the ill Mexican food spots in LA and learn ya some family...

...Hello Sneaker Freakers, how are you...

It's all love kids, the ones who know me, know me. Even if it's just on here.
