VINTAGE SNEAKERS - BAMBASTICS RECAP!

With Bread and Butter moving to Berlin this year, the next step for Barcelona was to create a fresh new tradeshow for those heads that couldn’t go without their fix. What they came up with was Outerspace – The Brandery (Post Fashion Circus) showcasing only the finest our culture has to offer. Their first order of business was to unleash the killer Sneaker Show – Bambastics. Best book in with your chiropractor now - the sneakers you are about to see will snap you from your neck to your nuts! Big ups to our Spanish Sneaker Freakers who copped the lowdown for us.

FRANK LIEW- QUBIC KING OF AUCKLAND!

Qubic is fast becoming one of the premier sneaker and street fashion boutiques of the Asia-Pacific. With its slick digs, an enviable list of brands and an enthusiastic core of local heads, the store is generating a palpable buzz from one of the region's most compact markets. Qubic’s exclusive top-tier outlet Quarters has attracted labels that rarely see distribution outside of Japan and Hong Kong - Soph, Silly Thing, Head Porter and Uniform Experiment to name a few. Not only was Qubic amongst the few stores globally to be granted adidas’ ObyO kzk collection, they actually managed to pinch Kazuki Kuraishi himself and fly him in for the launch! We caught up with Qubic head honcho Frank Liew to find out what all the fuss is about...

G-SHOCK THE WORLD - NYC PARTY RECAP!

We love a party as much as we love sneakers and any chance to visit the big apple for a knees up is fine with us! The invitation promised to ‘Shock the World’ and we were not disappointed. Despite the magazine deadline looming, we had to check ourselves, before we wrecked ourselves and after 24 hours in a big bird, we hit the ground running, going straight to the luscious venue known as Ciprianis down near Wall Street. With invitations drawn up by the man himself, the lure of Kanye’s personal performance was enough to have even the most ardent NY scenesters working the phones to get on the door list. This had to be the scorchingest ticket in town – we even saw cool cats crying on the street to be let in!

MELBOURNE YEEZY LAUNCH EVENT!

After such a deliciously elongated build up, it was no surprise that when the Night of the Yeezy finally rolled into Melbourne, there were some kids who were so excited they needed a dose of Ritalin to check themselves. After much jockeying to get on the guestlist, the secret party venue was brilliant and perfect for the Yeezy – blacklit, glossy and sexified with lasers scoping the room and go-go dancers Touching the Sky! With tunes tailored by the inimitable Raph Boogie, the eclectic crowd mingled as rumours swept the room. How many shoes? Who couldn’t make the guestlist? Who wanted them bad? Who would miss out? So many questions, so little time.

ADISKATE - MATT IRVING INTERVIEW

You might not know Matt Irving's name but we can guarantee you've seen or indeed own some of his handiwork. With a knack for geometric flow and a natural flair for clean lines, his style is instantly appealing and offers snippets of humour in unexpected places. From his own work under the banner of Delphi, which included some great designs for Element, and more recently one of our shoes of the year in the Milk Blazer SB, he has had his finger in more than a few pies. Right now though, he's taken on a pretty big job handling all the visuals for the embryonic adidas Skate team.

THE NIKE FOOTSCAPE

In the nineties Nike produced some of its most exciting and visually striking footwear. Two models in particular, the Footscape and the Moc, have remained favourites among sneaker aficionados and are still in production, having been made in numerous colourways. Tory Orzeck was involved in the design of both of these twisted models - Here's what he had to say about them...

SATOSHI SUZUKI (LOOPWHEELER) INTERVIEW

Innovation comes from everywhere and the Nike Sportswear collection’s design team recently looked to the history of Japanese manufacturing for techniques that would create the ultimate fleece. To get there they teamed up with Loopwheeler, a bespoke factory that still produces fabric on vintage machines called 'loopwheels.' Each one of these giant machines, some of which are 80 years old, is capable of producing 12 meters of fabric per day, enough for only eight sweatshirts. So you can be promised the quality of this fleece in the NSW collection is bar none. Courtesy of Nike we were able to get a look into this process with Loopwheeler owner, Satoshi Suzuki.

DELINLEE DELOVELY INTERVIEW

Taking inspiration from our ‘Biz’ feature in Issue 13, where we gave readers an insight into how influential key players in the sneaker/fashion industry made their way from A to Z, we thought it necessary to spread some female love and get a woman’s perspective. One who knows magazine madness like the back of her hand is ex-pat and serial blogger, Linlee Allen. A veteran in publishing circles, Linlee has proven that being able to sell yourself is the bottom line to making it in this fickle business. With a knack for talking her way into any situation, she has quickly garnered a massive roster of publications she contributes to, and is now the go to girl when it comes to fashion forecasting no thanks to her inspiring photo blog Delinee Delovely! Not bad for a girl from Adelaide! There definitely is something good in the water down there.

CATCHDUBS INTERVIEW

Sneaker Freaker and Nick Catchdubs go way back – we’re talking Issue 2 when Nick interviewed Scoop Jackson for us - so we can truly say ‘we knew him when’. The ultimate pop culture nerd, Nick’s resume reads like a dream come true. From busting out reviews on Turntable Lab to landing an editorial post at The Fader, it was his gift of the gab that took him to higher duties. Dipping his fingers in a plethora of pies, Catchdubs has since become a world-class DJ, club promoter, promotional machine and more recently, the co-founder of uber-hip record label Fool’s Gold with turntable prodigy A-Trak. We caught up with Nick on the eve of his local tour to see what’s been going down in lucky town!
