DIKEMBE MUTOMBO SIGNATURE SNEAKS

By definition, vintage goods speak to the interests and needs of a specific time. They are documents of the past, and yet when it comes to sneakers, so often the understanding of a model (or even obscure company) is limited purely to style. Beyond the surface look, each sneaker tells a story, and often a multitude of tales can be extracted – Fashion history, business history, trade history – all these things are intertwined in the body of a mass marketed good. One of the great examples of the potential of sneakers to serve as valuable historic documents is Dikembe Mutombo’s signature model from Adidas.

THE NIKE FOOTSCAPE

In the nineties Nike produced some of its most exciting and visually striking footwear. Two models in particular, the Footscape and the Moc, have remained favourites among sneaker aficionados and are still in production, having been made in numerous colourways. Tory Orzeck was involved in the design of both of these twisted models - Here's what he had to say about them...

SINDEN INTERVIEW

To have an ear for what the kids want takes a skill, and none know this better than UK spinster, Sinden. It’s this golden vestibule that has seen him not only score a coveted show on the UK’s number one radio station KISS FM, but tour with M.I.A. as her in-house DJ. Add to that remixing for the likes of Diplo and A-Trak, and the genre-smashing DJ has it set. With a penchant for high rolling street fashion and a fetish for the three-stripes, we take time out to chat to Sinden as he finishes off cuts for his new album with the Herve’s Count and readies for his Aussie tour, courtesy of Fuzzy.

KENDO LA INTERVIEW

Back in 2003, two gentlemen with a passion for footwear shared a light bulb moment. Rather than produce another clone of the same old retail formula, they initiated the first and only sneaker store catering exclusively for the ladies – Kendo. Based on Melrose in Los Angeles, Kendo is still with us five years later and gives its female clientele the home and proddy they so richly deserve. We tracked down the one and only Vladimir Borges to find out a bit more about Kendo and grill him on the obvious – why did two men start a business selling sneakers to women?

UBIQ SNEAKERS - TOKYO

Another tentacle of the Atmos empire is the sneaker brand known as Ubiq, (not to be confused with the US based store of the same name). After six years of progress, Ubiq is slowly making a mark outside Japan as retailers and kids pick up on the neat styling and vibrant colours. We caught up with Hommyo (owner of Atmos) and Kosaka, head designer of Ubiq to asked them both a few curly questions.

MADSTEEZ INTERVIEW

Californian street artist Mark Paul Deren, (a.k.a Madsteez) is a human colour wheel spinning on overdrive. From his scrappy little Ween doodles to his larger-than-life pop-soaked paintings and portraits, Deren’s vivid creations have caught the eye of an impressive list of commercial collaborators (not to mention Dennis Hopper, who himself has sat for a Deren portrait). Nike 6.0 are the latest to go mad for Mr Steez, inviting him to play mentor (or ‘weentor’) to emerging artist Evan ‘Stink’ Rossell on a colab shoe- the StinkWeen Braata. We caught up with Madsteez to chat about the project and his art… or at least we tried keeping up! It’s a twisted, ween-filled ride into a world that, as with his art, is always over the top... and where the tongue is firmly planted cheekwards.

NIKE CONSIDERED SNEAKERS

You gotta hand it to the guys at Beaverton. So many new projects, so many new ideas, it’s almost a full-time occupation keeping track of all of them. This latest effort is called Considered, and it has been cleverly designed to create minimal impact. The shoes are constructed from as few individual components as possible, have almost no lining, use recycled rubber, hemp laces and Vege-tan leather and can be easily disassembled. All things Considered, we think they’ve done an outstanding job!
