DAVE WHITE DOES KID ROBOT NYC!

Our good friend Dave White has been quiet of late (first time ever) but he just popped up again last week when he stormed New York and Miami to launch his new figures for Kidrobot. Peep his happy snaps and check the huge line-up of kids waiting at the KR stores as he signed the Sgt. Robots and DW posters for his loyal fanbase. DAVE THE CHIMP INTERVIEW

Sneaker chimpin’ ain’t easy, especially when you’re one of the original few that now finds it tough to sell out in a scene so obsessed with chasing paper. Dave The Chimp has been lurking in the dark alleys of Clerkenwell for nearly two decades throwing down his cartoon style characters on any solid surface he could find. A quick diagnosis of RSI led him to think ‘big’ and with that, it was hard not to notice his satirical comic artwork throughout the glum and grey surroundings of his UK hometown. A winning proposal to skate giants Vans has left the Chimp with a lot of explaining to do, with his contradictory efforts to stay loyal to his humble past yet keep himself cashed up enough not to have to succumb to a nine to five. We caught up with Dave for a hilarious chinwag and got the grit on the art known as ‘street’.

EXTRA BUTTER INTERVIEW (LONG ISLAND)

A Tribe Called Quest said it best on their hit If The Paper Comes, “Hot butter on what, say what, the popcorn”. Now a gang of well-educated sneaker heads have taken the term we used to describe how fresh our kicks were, and applied it to their movie inspired store Extra Butter. These guys don’t do anything by halves. Thirty minutes from the hype of New York City, these Long Island cats are killing it with only the finest in street apparel and ‘extra buttery’ kicks! Having just had the honours of scooping their own Bo Jackson inspired Nike Tee, we find out why Butter Knows!

VINTAGE SNEAKER COLLECTOR - BRYAN LAROCHE

Coming up in a time when trainers weren’t affordable enough to buy in multiple pairs, one thing set Bryan LaRoche apart from the usual scrum of toddler sneaker heads. He had a rad Dad that was a major sneaker nut and sports crazy enough to hand down his obsession with looking freshly dipped in every race he ran. This kick-started an extreme love affair that has lasted decades with the LaRoches stockpiling a museum of neck-breaking heat between them. We caught up with the vintage vulcan as he shows us the best of his sneaker porn collection!

SANDY BODECKER - NIKE SB VICE PRESIDENT

Meet Sandy Bodecker. Vice-President of Nike, honorary Australian, musclecar enthusiast and the man in charge of Nike’s big push into the Skate Park. Under his reign, Nike has reclaimed all the credibility lost during its first ill-fated foray into the world of skateboarding, and then some. With a skate team of superstars at his disposal and prices for many Dunk models stable at around $4-500us, the future looks rosy. But a big question mark remains - can the team make Nike’s other skate models (the Angus, EQ and the URL) winners as well?

HIP-HOP SNEAK ATTACK

When Bathing Ape’s Nigo (infamous for attention to detail and exclusivity) teamed up with Pharrell Williams (a snappy dresser amid hordes of hip-hoppers in cheap loose denim and oversized tees) to create their own line of kicks, the results would be something special, right? Hmmmm. Given the close ties between Hip Hop and sneakers (some naïve souls might label them the fifth element of this beautiful culture) like the Biz Safari connection, Eazy E in Jordan 3s, The Ultramagnetics’ name-checking Troop, iconic fat-laced Pumas…and some rock boxing kids from Queens (more on that later), collaborations are an inevitability. So how come the hit/miss ratio on these kicks is becoming increasingly unbalanced?

VINTAGE NIKE COLLECTOR - LINDY DARRELL

Back in the seventies, a little brand started called Blue Ribbon Sports, which in turn became a colossus called Nike. None know this early era better than running aficionado Lindy Darrell. With a closet chock full of only the finest and rarest Nike ‘flats’ to have ever graced the track, Lindy has patiently and methodically assembled what must be one of the finest stockpiles of early Nike sneakers in the world. Strap on your spikes as we hurdle through the ups and downs of Lindy’s collection and behold the power of nylon!

THE BIZ! KEVIN IMAMURA (NIKE SB)

When Nike decided to do skate, they did it big! Back in 2002, their crack team began an astonishing period of sublime product development that created unprecedented hype – Alpha Numeric, Supreme, Jedi, Homer, Tokyo, Dunkle, Raygun, Aloha, Bison, Pigeons, Tiffany, Hemp, Hunter... Bam! All of them dropped like bunkerbusters complete with fat tongues and Zoom Air. Nike SB made sneakers the coolest damn thing in the world and Kevin Imamura was on the frontline to see it all happen. But before that, he worked in college radio and magazines, using his grounding in pop culture to kick open one door after another. Following your passion is one choice piece of advice, but as Kevin says, connecting the dots is what it’s all about.

THE BIZ! MARK DOHERTY (ASICS)

Mark Doherty is one rare bird. A fair dinkum Aussie that bleeds green and gold, he has risen through the ranks to become one of the top heads at ASICS, where he markets concepts for their performance range of footwear. Along the way, he has infused his biomechanical prowess with his own peculiar sense of humour, and in the process, helped make ASICS the leading athletic shoe company. He loves a joke as much as he loves shoes, which makes this a thoroughly entertaining discussion.
